Chapter 8 (Page 461): "Me blossoming as a made-member of the 'E-4 Mafia.'
Compare this official portrait at twenty-one years old to the one I sat for at nineteen when I had just arrived and still suffered from resting cholo face (RCF)."
Chapter 8 (Page 472): "For maximal effect, I also sprouted an obnoxious, standard issue law enforcement mustache like Lieutenant Jim Dangle from Reno 911 (2003-2022). Inside, outside, and on paper, I appeared to be just the kind of psychopath the LAPD was looking for at the time ('Mexican American Psycho'?). I looked like a future captain, at least!"
Chapter 8 (Page 485): "The battle to achieve our individual full
potential while happily leading successful, purpose-driven and fulfilled,
joyful lives ought to be approached the same way...As examples—in your job, whatever title you may hold, you’re the Air Force (air/occupation domain), as a parent, the Army (land/family domain), in your spiritual life, the Space Force or Cyber Command (space/self-centering domain), and as an aspiring global citizen, the Navy (sea/communities domain), or any other role and conceptional configuration of your choosing...none of these ['purpose domains'] can be neglected or ignored... “dominance” must be achieved in each, completely and synergistically, in order to achieve holistic success i.e., in order to live life on True North.
Chapter 8 (Page 509): "Again, it can be done out of order [college-career-family], but that doesn’t mean it ought to be. Nonetheless, that was me—just joining the Army—trying to make a big splash during my first enlistment while setting up for an Olympic-level dive that would all but secure my legacy in the annals of greatness (think 'Triple Lindy' from Back to School for how blindly
ambitious I was."
Chapter 8 (Page 524): "At the time, I simply struggled to believe and accept what was happening. For a moment, I actually thought (then hoped) I was dreaming. Honestly, I felt like I was in the movie Independence Day (1996) when its characters were experiencing and trying to comprehend the unthinkable: That’s how overconfident I’d become in our standing in the world—that shy of an alien invasion or nuclear war with Russia, which was supposedly no longer a threat, we were literally untouchable."
Chapter 8 (Page 525): 'Why?' she asked, which was disheartening because it meant I had to watch her learn for the first time what was happening. Together, we watched both towers fall, one after the other, horrified and in disbelief. It was to our generation what Pearl Harbor was to my grandfather’s—another that will live in infamy. [She] asked me what it meant. 'It means we’re going to war,' I answered. 'With who?' she asked. 'We don’t know yet,' I responded."
Chapter 8 (Page 483): "...an illustration of how you might envision the Five Stages of Change Model, SMART Goal Method, and Seven Step Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Process all coming together [WITHIN THE MULTI-DOMAIN OPERATING ENVIRONMENT] to give you the ability to bridge the gap of any delta along your True North journey, no matter how many or how wide [or formidable or contested] the delta(s)."
Chapter 8 (Page 470): "As usual, there’s always a song that captures perfectly what we were going through during any major milestone in our relationship, whether good or bad. It’s often one that’s hard to get away from, both in resonance and in popularity...To this day, [this song] inspires me to stay true to my 4-point plan." [The video reminds me of how happy I am that I did!]
Chapter 8 (Page 471): "I was picked up by my dad at LAX, feeling like the girl from Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA (2012) song: 'Who’s that Mexican rocking kicks with four-inch soles, Velcro convertible pants, and a painted on, sparkling t-shirt, he must be from out of town…' Yes, I am from out of town. Thank you for noticing: Mannheim, Germany. Woher kommen sie?!'"
